Uganda vs Algeria: Players’ Views from Cranes camp in Cameroon: Jamal, Mato speak out

Record champions, Sports Club Villa on Tuesday moved closer to winning the StarTimes Uganda Premier League title they last won 19 years ago when they beat Blacks Power FC at Wankulukuku.

Going into Tuesday’s game on 49 points, the same as Vipers and KCCA FC but only separated by goal difference, each of the three teams aimed at maintaining momentum as the league winds up.

The Jogoos who were at home made no mistake, earning a crucial win, thanks to a Charles Bbaale strike to see them move to 52 points at the summit of the table.

KCCA , Vipers falter

In other games in the title chase, Kitende based Vipers and Lugogo based KCCA FC falters when they all played to draws.

Vipers who were away in Jinja to BUL FC played to a one all draw whereas 13-time champions, KCCA FC were held to goalless draw by Busoga United FC at Kakindu Stadium.

The Tuesday results mean that going into the penultimate game, each of the three teams will need to win their game to remain in the title contention.

SC Villa is now at the top of the table with 52 points, two ahead of second placed Vipers, the same number of points that KCCA FC has but the latter has an inferior goal difference.

In the penultimate game of the season, SC Villa will only need a win to lift the league title they last won in 2004.

In the last games, SC Villa will play tax collectors, URA FC away whereas KCCA FC will host Bright Stars at Lugogo wile Vipers will host Jinja SSS.

International Friendly: DR Congo 1-0 Uganda; We have achieved our targets

Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic believes that his boys have benefitted a lot from today international friendly played against DR Congo at Japoma Stadium in Douala Cameroon.

Cranes suffered a narrow 1-0 loss at the hands of the Congolese team now handled by former Uganda head coach Sebastian Desabre.

Uganda conceded a first penalty but there were signs of great efforts and improvements as noticed by the coach as he addressed the media during the post-match press conference in a packed room by members of media.

Uganda was on the wrong footing in the first half but returned for the remaining 45 minutes and put up a big show.

Substitutions were made as seven players were given chance to make a productive run out that improved the display in the second half. Substitute Charles Lukwago make a fabulous save midway the second half while Milton Karisa’s attacking efforts were about to pay off but missed a glorious opportunity to level the score.

“As you are undoubtedly aware, the SUPL is in its final stages of conclusion with the title not yet decided with 4 matches (on average) to go,” a statement from the UPL CEO Bainamani Bernard Bampaire explains.

Equal Opportunity

“In the spirit of fair play and equal opportunity, UPL Secretariat has made the following fixture adjustments to ensure the last three matches involving KCCA FC, SC Villa and Vipers SC are played on the same date and time.”

The Jogoos lead the table with 46 points from 25 games; Vipers follow with 45 from 23 outings, while KCCA dropped to third with the same number of points after 24 games.

According to the original fixtures and the unbalanced composition, Villa was meant to complete their schedule on Saturday 20th, May on match day 29 and watch as their rivals play a week later on the ultimate day of the season.

To avoid a case of manipulation, the UPL has adjusted the fixture so that all three contenders finish on the same day.

URA’s match against Gaddafi, which had been slated for the final day, will now be played on the penultimate day and then Villa complete their season against the Tax Collectors.

This is best UPL season in living memory

The fans in the stands and on the sidewalk, breathless. Two games to go to close the season and no idea who will win the title except that any of Vipers, KCCA, and Villa can.

The 2022-23 league championship is unprecedented. The road has been long, narrow, and winding; the marathon race is arduous.

The fans in the stands and on the sidewalk, breathless. Two games to go to close the season and no idea who will win the title except that any of Vipers, KCCA, and Villa can.

All on 49 points but significantly separated by goal difference. Perhaps it’s here that the championship will be won or lost. Each of Vipers and KCCA has not lost a game at home all season and both have lost five games away from home. Villa has lost once at home and four games away. It’s Villa who have posted the most wins however; 16 in total, while each of Vipers and KCCA have won 14 times.

Choosing which of the three deserves to be champions comes to where one’s allegiance lies and it’s become increasingly clear that very few local football fans are standing on the sidewalk as spectators. The anxiety and excitement about the possibilities have sucked in everyone. It’s hard to remember a season in Uganda league football history where three big teams went in the final games of the season each with a possibility to be declared champions. That this has come at a time of television broadcasting of the league is timely, almost a dream. Every action in the games involving the title chasers is on camera and the possibility that any result is pre-determined has been reduced to zero. The stadiums are filling and the remote controls at home are busy. On social media, streets, corridors, bars, hang-out places, markets, radio, and television, there’s football vibe everywhere.

In recent weeks, the pendulum has been shifting from left to right and it’s impossible to predict its final rest. KCCA were the early pace setters with BUL and Wakiso Giants giving the top of the table a refreshing outlook for much of the first round. On the field, Wakiso was playing the most eye-catching football and producing stand-out individual players. Their dip came when the lure of money prompted the club to sell Ibrahim Kasule and Frank Ssebuufu, the two stand-out players up front.

BUL’s fall began with the departure of coach Alex Isabirye. This was the time for surprise package Villa – who played at least five home games in away stadiums as they served a FUFA punishment for fans’ hooliganism – to shake the branches. Using defense as the foundation of their challenge, they put together a surprising run of positive results that catapulted them to the top and they never looked back. If they hadn’t been docked two points as part of their punishment, they would be a shoulder above both Vipers and KCCA at this stage.

Vipers indifferent start took long to stabilize until Isabirye boarded the bus. They slowly overcame the injuries to star players and the goals returned. Even their inconsistency in recent weeks has not stopped them from keeping their noses in front. KCCA failed to take full advantage of Vipers’ stuttering start and coach Morley Byekwaso paid the ultimate price. Jackson Mayanja was seen as an interim placement and was given the remaining nine games to convince the club that he could secure the job permanently. Strangely, all three title chasers have failed to handle the pressure at the same time and their fans are lost for words.

At the tail end of the table, the full story is yet to be told as well. While Onduparaka is surely heading for the drop, Busoga United, Blacks Arrows, and UPDF are embroiled in a death fight; as unpredictable as the champion to be. It remains to be seen how this all will wrap up but what’s for sure is that the season has turned out to be the most exciting in the last 20 years. Three big teams fighting for the championship until the last day; three sets of fans biting off their nails till blood oozes out. What a season1

SC Villa Overcome Vipers To Improve Title Chances

SC Villa beat title rivals Vipers 1-0 to tighten their grip on the top of the Uganda Premier League.

Charles Bbaale scored the all important goal as Villa got one over their rivals at Wankulukuku.

Bbaale headed in past Fabien Mutombora after neat work from crafty midfielder Travis Mutyaba few minutes after the half-hour mark.

The Venoms huffed and puffed, but couldn’t get a leveller on the day.

Karim Ndugwa headed onto the crossbar after he was set by Martin Kizza as Vipers searched for an equaliser.

Meddie Kibirige, in Villa goal, was busy and outstanding as he kept out attempts from Abubakar Lawal, Bright Anukani, Karim Watambala and Siraje Sentamu.

Vipers leave Wankulukuku with more to worry about including defender Livingston Mulondo who was rushed to hospital after head collision with Mutyaba.

The win sees Villa remain atop with 46 points, still two above KCCA who beat Gaddafi at Kakindu.

Vipers remain third but, with 34 points, slip seven points below Villa who have played three games more on them.

This, is the first league loss for Vipers under new coach Alex Isabirye but with a couple of games in hand, he will remain confident about his title chances.

This is a big step and a huge statement of intent for Villa who are chasing their first league crown since 2004.

And it’s a good reaction after Jackson Magera after his Jogoos lost 4-1 at Lugogo against KCCA.

SC Villa beat Express by 2-1 at Wankulukuku

Ten-man SC Villa came from a goal down to beat Express FC at Mutesa II stadium, Wankulukuku to complete a double over their rivals.

Allan Kayiwa early opener turned into a consolation as David Owori and Sheif Batte scored to earn the Jogoos all points despite a second-half red card to goalkeeper Meddie Kibirige.

Villa started the better team and should have scored inside the first minute but Charles Bbaale was denied by the upright despite beating Denis Otim.

Kayiwa then scored from a free kick in the 32nd minute to hand the hosts a lead which only lasted four minutes as Owori levelled matters at the opposite end.

In the 59th minute, Kibirige was sent off for an off-the-ball incident against Marvin Oshaba forcing the Villa bench to reshuffle their pack by substituting striker Bbaale for Martin Elungati.

The hosts responded to the numerical advantage by introducing more attackers in Ivan Mayanja, Anwar Ntege and later Joseph Akwandanaho in search for the winner.

Mayanja and Kayiwa had chances wasted before Villa broke down the left and Owori set up Batte to score into an empty net sending the Villa fans into frenzy in the 77th minute.

Despite a late surge, Villa held on for all points that send them second on the table with 31 points, four behind leaders KCCA after 17 games, one less than their Lugogo rivals.

Defeat extends the Red Eagles’ winless streak to ten games in the league as they stay 11th with 18 points, six ahead of the relegation monster.

Next on the menu for James Odoch’s men is a trip to Gaddafi on March 19 just days after playing the Stanbic Uganda Cup.

SC Villa will shift focus to the Uganda Cup with a replay against BUL lurking next week.

Match Preview: Busoga United vs SC Villa.

The Jogoos to take a trip to FUFA Technical Centre, Njeru in a matchday 9 fixture against Busoga United.

Two days after securing a late win against Kitara F.C, the Jogoos return to action tomorrow. We will visit another relegation-threatened side, Busoga United.

The hosts are yet to win a single game in 8 fixtures this season. They have accumulated 4 points from a possible 24, all coming from draws. Busoga United have managed to draw two games at home and away from home respectively. They have managed to score in all their four home games this season and in equal measure concede in all of them. They have averaged 1.5 goals scored and 2.5 goals conceded per game at home.

The Jogoos have a 2-in-1 challenge to overcome in this fixture. First, the boys will look to collect maximum points from the bottom three with a win again Busoga United. Second, we hope to gain our first away win of the season with four unsuccessful attempts.

This fixture is an opportunity for Edward Kaziba’s team to kick start a run of good away form in the league this season. We will have to put in a good shift tomorrow evening to overcome the obstacle ahead of us.

UPDF Condemns SC Villa To First Home Defeat Of the Season.

UPDF scored in the 74th minute of the game to walk away with all three points from the Bombo Military Barracks Grounds.

In the opening quarter of an hour of the game, UPDF were the dominant side. They attacked the Villa goal without remorse. They created 4 goal scoring chances, had one shot target and forced 4 corner kicks but the Villa defence stood firm.

In the process of neutralizing the opponents’ forward advances, Derrick Ndahiro pulled down an opponent. This earned him his third yellow card of the season making him suspended for our next fixture.

The Jogoos got the first attempt on goal in the 20th minute when striker Ogwang’s shot was tipped by the goalkeeper onto the crossbar and into a corner kick. At this point, Kaziba’s boys looked like they had gained their attacking boots.

Both teams continued pushing for an opener but both goalkeepers held their ground most especially Meddie Kibirige who pushed away many balls targeted for his goal.

Review: #TheJogoos 2-2 Police.

Ssenoga and Goffin combine twice for each to score in the stalemate against Police F.C.

The Jogoos came into this game without defenders Asuman Harisheh and Derrick Ndahiro. With very limited options in defence, Coach Kaziba started Emmanuel Alex Wasswa in central defence. He partnered with Joseph Nsubuga, a right-back who always stepped at centre back whenever called upon.

Police got the first goal scoring chances of the game but failed to break the deadlock. On two different occasions, they attacked from the left-hand side of Villa’s but sent their shots inches wide away from the right-hand goalpost.

Villa’s first chance of the game came in the 17th minute. Centre half Joseph Nsubuga sent a long ball from a freekick a few inches from the centre line in Police’s half on the right flank into the area. The ball was seemingly headed away by a defender but it fell into the path of Goffin. Goffin managed to pick out advancing Muhammad Ssenoga who curled into the bottom left corner to give Villa the lead.
